~Buckeyes Reinstated by NCAA... Finally
Just
in time for their first road game of the season, Ohio State
got some good news for a change. The NCAA reinstated three
Buckeyes players who were suspended for taking envelopes
with $200 cash at a charity event earlier this year. Jordan
Hall and Travis Howard, tabbed as starters for the Buckeyes
in the preseason, along with safety Corey "Pittsburgh"
Brown, were suspended two games for violating NCAA rules by
taking the improper benefits at an event in suburban
Cleveland in February.
~Harris Seeks Redemption
Miami
quarterback Jacory Harris has returned to the starting
lineup after serving a whopping one-game NCAA suspension,
according to a depth chart released by the school for the
Sept. 17 game against Ohio State. Harris will be given a
chance to redeem himself from an inconsistent career that
has been riddled with turnovers. Last year he threw 14
touchdowns and 15 interceptions, including four picks en
route to a 36-24 loss to OSU. In 2009 he threw for 24
touchdowns and 17 interceptions.
~Pulse Check
Toledo
pushed the Buckeyes to the brink before finally succumbing
when a fourth-down pass from the OSU 16-yard line fell
incomplete with 48 seconds to play. A 27-22 victory kept
Ohio State from an infamous day. The Buckeyes hadn't lost to
an in-state rival since 1921, when Woody Hayes was 8 years
old. Credit the Buckeyes for finding a way to win, but even
in these scandal-filled days it's odd to hear them talk
about fighting spirit when the opponent hails from the MAC.
~Not So Fast
Jordan
Hall, Travis Howard and Corey Brown who were expected to
play for the first time this season against Toledo, have
been sent back to the sideline by the NCAA. The NCAA posted
a statement on its website saying that the three remain
ineligible while it continues to investigate their
acceptance of $200 each while attending a charity event.
This came after coach Fickell said that the three would be
available to play. OSU athletic director Gene Smith said he
was surprised by the decision.
~The Fickell Era Begins
Even
missing eight suspended players, Ohio State had more than
enough talent left behind. "We're going to focus on the guys
we have," Fickell said after his first game as head coach
since taking over for Jim Tressel. "That's the most
important thing. If it changes week to week, we're going to
continue to have guys step up." Against Akron, the Buckeyes
had a bevy of stars. In addition to the score, every stat
was heavily in OSU's favor, including first downs (27-5),
rushing (224-35) and sacks (5-0).
